Services for Your Specific Situation

Many of the cases we handle involve decisions regarding child agreements. Our goal aims to help co-parents reach amicable decisions on custody agreements, child support, and other arrangements that affect the child or children.

No case is the same. So McCoy Family Law in Denver, CO, offers custom services to address various family legal issues.

Child Custody and Child Support

One of the most significant factors facing parents during a divorce stems from deciding who gets custody. Whether you want full custody or more parenting time, McCoy Family Law will help fight for you.

Parents need to remember this key factor: Colorado is not a 50/50 child custody state. This means that the court will make custody decisions solely based on the best interests of the child or children.

Prenups and Premarital Agreements

Navigating prenuptial agreements amid a separation can prove challenging. McCoy family lawyers understand the complexities of marital and premarital agreements and can help you ease the process.

Division of Property

Property shared throughout the duration of a marriage represents marital property. Typically, parties will receive equal amounts of marital property amid a divorce or separation. However, the length of the marriage, spouse contributions, and spouse income will factor into property division.

Separation

The separation process has similarities to the divorce process. However, parties seeking separation rather than divorce will remain legally married.

Parties undergoing separation face different financial liabilities than they would in a divorce. Since couples are still legally married under separation terms, they can maintain joint insurance policies and retirement benefits.

Adoption

Adoption is a beautiful and exciting endeavor; however, it comes with piles of paperwork. To ensure that the child will grow up in a loving home, families seeking adoption must undergo an intensive and complex adoption process. As a compassionate family law firm, we love helping families navigate the adoption system to bring a new child home.

Whatever legal challenges your family faces, the professionals at McCoy Family Law in Denver, CO, are here to help.

Appeals / post-decree reviews

If you believe the trial court made a serious mistake in their ruling, you may want to speak with an attorney to determine whether an appeal is possible.

adoptions / guardianships

Familial relationships have a legal component that defines certain rights and responsibilities. Often, the legal recognition of certain relationships may carry an emotional significance as well.

agreements

By settling a case outside of courtroom litigation, you can avoid an uncertain or foreseeably detrimental ruling and create your own solutions.

SPECIALIZING IN YOU

Colleen McCoy is an attorney who is passionate about providing caring and aggressive representation to clients throughout all stages of their family law cases. Colleen focuses her practice on helping clients fight for their rights but also upon resolving that which can be resolved. Prior to forming McCoy Family Law, LLC, Colleen practiced for several years as a family law attorney and a partner in other small firms and as a solo practitioner in the Denver area. It was during this time that she earned her reputation as a bulldog in her representation of clients.
Colleen is a graduate of the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. During law school, Colleen was actively involved in the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Honors Society, the International Law Society, Intellectual Property Society, and Business Law Society. She also interned with the Law Office of Mary Jean Kindschuh, who was an early advocate for advancing GLBTQ parental rights in the Denver metro area.
After receiving her Juris Doctorate, Colleen interned with Colorado Legal Services/Metro Volunteer Lawyers. Colorado Legal Services is a nonprofit specializing in family law issues whose primary purpose is to provide free and reduced fee legal services to indigent people. These experiences laid the framework for the tough but sympathetic representation McCoy Family Law provides today.
Colleen earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During her time at UNM, Colleen worked in the psychology department as a research assistant for Dr. Kathy Stansbury studying the stress hormone cortisol and coping behaviors in preschool aged children. Colleen partnered with Dr. Stansbury and their findings were published in the Journal of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology in 1998.
When not engaged in zealously representing her clients, Colleen enjoys snowboarding, fly fishing, camping, music and traveling. She is married and has three children.
